'believe I have a '71 170 3 spd , where are you located? .
'71 Maverick 3-OTT 170 3.03 has no floor shift bosses on alum tailshaft housing, Mustangs etc typically have floor shifter booses' . 3.03 'Toploader' was used from the 170 up thru big block V8's with only minor differences.
Most likely the 1st gear on an early Stang 3.03 is going to be 2.99:1.
It's going behind a '55 322 Buick Nailhead for a '28 model A Coupe. CJ t-150 Top shifter set up like this photo.
I can't find the 3.03 ratio chart that lists 3 speed toploader ratios, there is a complete list somewhere online, but '70 and '71 Maverick specs list 3.41 1st gear ratio. I thought 3.49. '70-'71 Maverick 170 is the only years and engine this ratio was used on.
I'm running a 2.75:1 ring and pinion, don't want to go t5 for overdrive. 3 speed is what I'm going with.
3.41 1st with 2.75 rear gives me a 9.3775:1 first gear drive ratio, and a 2.75:1 top gear drive ratio.
Shooting for better 1st gear torque, with lower freeway r.p.m.s with 2.75 rear.
I'm not going to use the Maverick housing, I really just need the guts. Going to swap gear assembly to the input/output shafts of the short 3.03 I have to get a little bit longer driveshaft. First gear in the short 3.03 I have is 2.99.
Some other 3.03 Ford top loaders that used the 3.41 1st, 1.86 2nd, 1.00 3rd gear set are the 1963 to 67 Econolines having a 144 or 170 six, plus the 1966 & 67 Bronco's with a 170 six. Good luck in the hunt.
